Chapter 15

Danielle and Millie stayed at the church until Scout grew weary of exploring and flopped down on the ground.

“We tuckered him out.” Millie gently picked the pup up and placed him back inside the stroller. “I need to get into the habit of taking Scout out more often.”

The women made their way onto the sidewalk, heading in the opposite direction of the port. They slowed when they reached a cozy coffee shop on the corner. “Should we?” Millie joked.

“We should,” Danielle said.

The shop had a wide selection of teas along with specialty coffees. They both chose something different and returned outside with their to-go orders.

Millie sipped her iced coffee and placed it in the cupholder on the side of the stroller. “There’s another cupholder if you need it.”

“Thanks. This thing has all of the bells and whistles,” Danielle teased.

“Only the best for Scout.”

“We still have some time before our afternoon shifts start. I was thinking…it wouldn’t hurt for us to swing by Andy’s office to have a look at Sophia’s Sunday and Monday schedules.”

“That’s a great idea,” Millie said. “Maybe something will pop out at us. I’ll need to run Scout back to the apartment first.”

“While you do that, I’ll head to Andy’s office to get a copy, and then I’ll meet you somewhere. How about the library? It will be nice and quiet.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

Back on board the ship, Danielle made a beeline for the bank of elevators while Millie stepped off to the side to adjust her backpack. She tucked Scout under her arm as she folded the stroller and began dragging it up the stairs.

“This is crazy,” she puffed. “I need to do something about my fear of elevators.”

It was a slow go as she struggled to reach deck ten and the bridge. They finally made it, and Millie paused to catch her breath before easing the door open.

Nic and several other officers were seated at the conference table. He started to stand, but Millie waved him off. “It’s okay. I have this.”

She set Scout down, and he trotted toward the table. “Scout,” Millie warned.

Scout’s ears lowered, and he circled back around, scampering down the hallway to their door.

Nic chuckled. “Poor Scout.”

“Poor Millie,” she joked as she hurried to catch up with him.

Inside the apartment, Scout perked up long enough to eat and then settled onto his doggie bed. She gave him a pat on the head before changing back into her work uniform.

The meeting was still going on when she tiptoed back across the bridge.

Danielle was already waiting for her in front of the library, a look of irritation on her face.

“You didn’t get the schedules?”

“No. Andy is being a turd. He insisted on knowing why I wanted them, why I needed them right now, what was I looking for. Finally, I gave up.”

Millie’s heart sank. “We need those to track Sophia’s movements to see where she worked on those days and around the time when she first got sick.”

“Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
